Magnetic supports WSP with delivery of highway net zero plan

magnetic has partnered with WSP to support National Highways with the creation of a transformative stakeholder engagement plan to facilitate action around its net zero commitments.

WSP, one the UK’s leading engineering professional services consultancies, is to advise National Highways for the next two years on the delivery of the ambitious commitments within its net zero plan.

Launched in July 2021, National Highways’ Net Zero Highways plan is one of the most ambitious strategies in the UK infrastructure sector and WSP, alongside its consortia which includes Mott MacDonald and Ramboll, and with support from magnetic, developed it in close collaboration with National Highways.

National Highways’ net zero plan, launched in July 2021, is an ambitious programme that cuts carbon in line with the global, Science Based Target Initiative’s trajectory to keep climate change at or below 1.5 degrees celsius. It also supports the Department for Transport’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan.

magnetic has been working closely with WSP over the last month to craft a bold and distinctive net zero stakeholder engagement strategy that will galvanise National Highway’s internal and external stakeholders into taking further action. The aim is to help build an ambitious, forward thinking net zero culture that will help to decarbonise National Highways and strengthen sector involvement. This partnership builds on previous work with National Highways to help craft their net zero plan and with WSP on internal stakeholder engagement with net zero.

David Symons, UK Director of Sustainability at WSP and Project Director, said:

“We’re proud to have been reappointed to lead the work with National Highways to implement their world class net zero plan. The next few years are critical to get the UK on track for net zero and National Highways have a key role in leading the innovation needed to decarbonise UK construction and transport.”

Stephen Elderkin, Director of Environmental Sustainability for National Highways, said:

“Last July we set out our ambitious plan to achieve net zero for corporate, construction and user emissions. The focus is now on implementing it. I look forward to working with WSP to deliver against our commitments and take a big step forward to a sustainable transport system and make a major contribution to delivering the UK’s climate targets.”

Tom Whitwell, Managing Consultant at magnetic, said:

“This is a very exciting piece of work. Over the last three years magnetic have helped some of the UK’s largest companies to deliver on their Net Zero pledges. National Highways have a remarkable and ambitious plan that will transform the UK’s transport system for the better, and we’re very proud to be shaping that plan.”

In October 2020, WSP announced a commitment to halve the carbon footprint of all designs and advice provided to clients by 2030, a first in the engineering consultancy sector. magnetic has recently announced its ambition to halve its carbon footprint by 2030, and to become net zero by 2040 in line with the Paris Agreement.
